Discovery/Day Tours
Submarine Caves/ Tunnels Discovery
Explore the labyrinths of three of the most impressive Submarine Tunnels, which are located all around the Adriatic seas of Montenegro. The Submarine Caves were used to hide submarines during the World War 2. Experience the vastness of the tunnels and prepare to be astounded, get off and explore the secret tunnels, go for a swim or if you are truly brave- dive off from the top of the cave into the sea.
Cut into the rock of the steep coast on Herceg Novi Bay, Submarine hideouts were made by the formidable President of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia as a precaution against attack to hide the Submarines. The tunnels run about 80m into the coastline and the outside of the opening is designed and covered by fake rocks so they would not be invisible to satellites or spy planes.
Visit Montenegro’s longest kept secret!
What is the duration?
The tour of the caves takes 2 hours.
This tour can be extended into a half day (4h) or full day (8h) tour with a lunch stop and exploring other sites within the area. Please see Mamula Fortress Tour and Blue Caves for further information.
Where does it start?
The tour begins from Tivat – Porto Montenegro – Pier 1. However we are happy to collect you anywhere on the Kotor Bay (extra charges may apply depending on time and distance).
What can I expect?
Hear about the history, stop at 2 – 3 submarine tunnels. Have the option to get off inside and walk around the secret tunnels or get off and jump off from the biggest cave. Cruise past an old wreck and Rose – The Old Captains Village.
What should I bring?
Please be dressed in swimwear if you would like to swim as there is no changing room on board, go snorkeling or cliff jumping. Flip-flops or shoes are a must when you are exploring the tunnels.
What else can I do?
Hire from the MWT office snorkels, wakeboards or water-ski and take full advantage of the boat on the return journey. (Available for Half and Full Day Tours with additional charges for equipment and fuel). Extend the tour and go for a walk or stop for lunch in Rose – The Old Captains Village, or stop at Onna Beach Club on the way back and enjoy some cocktails and music.
What else do I need to know?
Depending on the weather we may not be able to stop at the Submarine caves and allow you to get off or if the weather is not suitable for swimming we can organize a stop at Rose – The Old Captains village for a walk or lunch. Boating is an active entertainment and there is always a chance you may get wet. We are happy to provide waterproof ponchos if needed.
What is the best time to visit?
Tourist boats tend to visit the caves during the hours of 12-3pm. We recommended visiting before or after or taking a lunch break. The tunnels are best to visit during the day, before the sun sets.
